Gillian Bickley

Gillian Bickley is an English writer, teacher, and speaker, who has lived in Hong Kong for about thirty years, teaching at the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University. She taught previously at Universities in Nigeria and New Zealand, and has lectured throughout Britain, the USA and Asia.

A recent book, Hong Kong Invaded! A '97 Nightmare, published by Hong Kong University Press (2001), is a new edition of a long-lost novella, The Back Door, predicting the invasion of Hong Kong by France and Russia in 1897. It includes Literary and Historical Introductions, A New Kind of Fiction, by I. F. Clarke, a Foreword by Arthur E. Gomes, Commentary by R. G. Horsnell, illustrations by Arthur Hacker, period and military photos, maps, extensive notes, bibliography, index and a key by Bickley to the real identities of characters.

The Golden Needle: The Biography of Frederick Stewart (1836-1889), a well-researched mini-history of 19th-century Hong Kong government education told through the biography of its founder, has been widely reviewed in English, Chinese, French and Portuguese.

Bickley has also written books for children, including Jockey, a reader first published by Heinemann Far East and reissued by Proverse Hong Kong and Alphabet Rhyme a book, workbook and bilingual tape for very young readers, published by Sun Ya.
