Vivian Yang
the author

Born in the 1960s to Shanghai university professors and raised in the city's former French Concession, novelist Vivian W. Yang has considered the written word to be an integral part of her life, even during the most hostile of social, linguistic, and cultural environments.

Vivian Yang spent her first 25 years in China where she was a University lecturer in Shanghai covering English and International Journalism and a broadcast and print journalist in Beijing, also working in English. In addition to her undergraduate degree in English Language & Literature from the Shanghai International Studies University, she has an M.A. in Intercultural Communication from the Hugh Downs School of Communication at Arizona State University, and has studied Creative Writing at Columbia and NYU. While in China, she also studied at the Fulbright Foundation's American Studies Center as a scholar studying "American Literature" and "American Society & Culture" respectively. Vivian has worked in a Wall Street law firm, an investment bank and at the US multinationals Xerox and Revlon.

In 2001, she published her first novel, Shanghai Girl, a draft of which won her the top Literature Fellowship from the New Jersey Arts Council, making her the first recipient whose mother tongue is not English. She is also the author of Status, Society, and Sino-Singaporeans, a work of scholarly non-fiction.

Vivian Yang's English-language fiction has appeared in such leading publications as The Asian Pacific American Journal and AWARE; she has also been published in The Asian Wall Street Journal, the South China Morning Post, China Daily, China Daily Business Weekly, The New York Times and The National Law Journal.
